Building Unshakeable Confidence: How to Trust Yourself Again
One of the biggest misconceptions about confidence is that it comes from external reinforcement. The truth is that confidence comes from within. And the most confident people you know have mastered this, learning to listen to their inner voice and stop outsourcing their happiness, decisions and lives to others.
As a Dallas Life Coach, one of the most common reasons people reach out to me is because they’re struggling with their self confidence.
They’ve spent years second guessing every decision.
Overthinking every conversation.
Waiting until they feel “ready.”
Seeking reassurance from everyone around them.
Eventually, they stop listening to themselves altogether. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Whether you’re navigating a career change, rebuilding after a breakup, questioning your purpose, or feeling stuck in life, confidence isn’t built by pretending you’re fearless. It’s built by creating evidence that you can rely on yourself.
That’s where coaching becomes so powerful. Unlike therapy, which often focuses on understanding the past, coaching helps you create the future you actually want by taking intentional action.
What Confidence Really Is
Confidence doesn’t come from everything going your way, it comes from trusting yourself that even when things don’t go as planned, you’re okay, you’ve got you.
People often think confidence comes before action but reality, action creates confidence. I always say that action is the anecdote to fear. This means that every difficult conversation you lean into instead of avoiding, every boundary you set, every decision you make without asking ten people their opinions first and every time you are a man/woman of your word keeping promises to yourself, the more confidence you build.
Three Ways to Build Unshakeable Confidence
1. Reconnect With Who You Really Are
Many people lose confidence because they’ve spent years becoming who they thought they were supposed to be.
The dependable one.
The people pleaser.
The high achiever.
The one who never asks for help.
Over time, it’s easy to lose sight of who you actually are beneath everyone else’s expectations.
One of the first things I work on with coaching clients is helping them gain clarity around their values, strengths, priorities, and the life they genuinely want, not the one they feel obligated to live to make other people happy or to do what is expected of them.
The more aligned your life becomes, the more naturally your confidence grows.
2. Challenge the Story You’re Repeating
Our minds love certainty, even when the stories we’re telling ourselves aren’t true.
Maybe yours sounds like:
- “I’m too old to start over.”
- “I’m bad at relationships.”
- “I’ll never be confident.”
- “I’m not leadership material.”
- “Everyone else has it figured out.”
These aren’t facts, they’re practiced thoughts that have formed limiting beliefs and outdated patterns. One exercise I often give clients is to rewrite those limiting beliefs into something both empowering and believable.
For example, years ago I caught myself saying, “There are no men in Dallas.” That felt true at the time. Instead of forcing myself to believe the opposite overnight, I shifted it to: “I believe there could be one man in Dallas for me. That small change opened my mind instead of shutting it down.
3. Keep Promises to Yourself
If I could give only one confidence building exercise, this would be it. Do what you say you’re going to do. Do not declare it to yourself unless you are going to do it. Breaking promises to yourself chips away at your self confidence. On the flip side, every time you follow through with what you said to yourself you would do, your brain collects evidence that you’re dependable.
Why Coaching Helps You Build Confidence Faster
Trying to build confidence on your own can feel frustrating because you’re also trying to coach yourself through the same thoughts keeping you stuck. Having an outside perspective makes such a difference.
As a Life Coach in Dallas coaching clients across the country, I help clients uncover what’s actually driving their self-doubt, gain clarity about what they want, and create practical steps toward becoming the version of themselves they’ve been waiting to become.
