Have you ever noticed how you are more critical of yourself than you are of others?
Have you ever wished you could turn off your thoughts to stop the negativity spiral?
Do you find yourself feeling stuck in one or more areas of your life such as your career, health or relationships?
If so, your nasty voice has gotten out of control and has taken the driver’s seat in your life.
The nasty voice is the internal self-talk that never has anything positive to say. It can be your voice, the voice of a parent or other adult from your childhood or a combination of voices. Said most simply, the nasty voice is your trauma and limiting beliefs talking, and it’s making you feel bad and is keeping you stuck.
Overcoming Negative Self Talk
Mindset coaching techniques are a total game changer and come up with every single one of my clients in my practice of mindset coaching in Dallas. Most of my clients come to me when they are feeling stuck or are going through a major life transition – both of these things often make the nasty voice the most prevalent voice in your head.
To overcome negative self talk you must first befriend your nasty voice. This seems counterintuitive right? You wouldn’t want to befriend the school bully that the nasty voice seems similar to. But here’s the thing – the nasty voice in your head is actually trying to help you in a totally backwards, convoluted kind of way. The main job of the nasty voice is to keep you safe, and safe to the nasty voice means keeping you in your comfort zone. Even if your comfort zone is something you are actively trying to get out of, the nasty voice equates the known with safety.
Early on in the coaching partnership I guide my clients to cultivating more clarity on who the nasty voice sounds like, where they are self sabotaging and what limiting beliefs are keeping them playing small.
Reframing Negative Thoughts
Our brains are quite moldable. With the right tools you can completely rewire your brain, build mental resilience and implement mindful thought patterns. Through our coaching sessions we shed light on what has been getting in the way of this life changing rewiring process.
One of the main reasons why reframing your negative thoughts hasn’t worked for you is because the brain always defaults back to the familiar before it fully accepts the changes you are implementing. Given that the familiar is like going on auto pilot, this is usually where people get stuck – the sabotage of the nasty voice is so sneaky you can’t even tell when it’s happening.
I really believe that we can’t change our perspective permanently without someone outside of us coming in with new beliefs who can connect the dots and show us our patterns. When I do this for my clients it leads to ah-ha moments that blow their minds!
Positive Self Talk Strategies
If you’re eager to turn down the volume on your nasty voice once and for all so that you can get unstuck and live a life that feels good to you, life coaching is for you. We start with a complimentary consultation and you can live anywhere and coach with me.
To get you started, here are some self compassion practices:
- Befriend your nasty voice – start catching your voice in your mind and approach it with compassion. This will ultimately allow you to uncover your limiting beliefs, turn the volume down on your nasty voice and build mental resilience.
- Daily affirmations for confidence – did you know that positive affirmations change your brain (for the better)? Write down or record positive affirmations and read or listen to them daily. Some of my favorites include ‘I trust myself’ and ‘I am meant to have my desires, they were planted in me for a reason.’
- Empowering language habits – as you start catching your nasty voice, bring another new voice to the table. Allow the voice of your authentic self to be present with the nasty voice (your traumatized self). The authentic self knows she is inherently worthy and speaks love, kindness and compassion.
