I spent the majority of my adult life feeling lost.  ‘What is my purpose in life?’ and ‘there has got to be more to life than this’ were thoughts that played on repeat in my mind, driving me absolutely insane because I had no idea what my purpose was or what more to life even meant!

At the beginning of my personal growth journey I spent most of my energy focusing on (a.k.a. complaining about) what I didn’t like about my life, which in hindsight I realize was a total waste of time and completely draining.  I was in my early 20s living in a tiny apartment, working a soul sucking corporate job I had no passion for and spending what little free time I had out partying with friends which was rather hilarious as there wasn’t much going on worth celebrating in my life at that time!

‘There has got to be more to life than this’ grew from a whisper to a loud, persistent voice, and I knew I had to find meaning in life soon or I was going to lose my mind!

But how does one figure out what more to life than this feeling could possibly mean?  I certainly had no clue.  Things like personal growth and mental health weren’t really on my radar back then, so how to create a meaningful life was totally on me.

If It’s Good Enough For Oprah It’s Good Enough For Me

One particularly blah day, I found myself drawn to a show hosted by Queen Oprah, who at the time I only knew because my mom used to watch her talk show when I was growing up.  She was talking about a book called You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay, and before I knew it I was unboxing said book on my kitchen counter, eager to dive in and see if Ms. Hay could tell me what the heck I was supposed to do with my life.

This book began my personal transformation journey.  The Secret by Rhonda Byrne was getting a lot of hype at that time, so it became the next book on my journey.  From there I found yoga, went to therapy to heal some trauma (and honestly because I didn’t know life coaching existed), embarked on a spiritual journey and then I finally found life coaching which was everything I ever needed and more!  But as I learned on my own, when you are figuring out how to find fulfillment, there is a really cool, little known thing you can start doing.

Follow The Sparks

As a life coach for self-discovery in Dallas, I get so excited when I coach my clients on following the sparks, which is what completely changed my life for the better and answered the question of what ‘more to life’ meant for me.

Following the spark seems so simple, and yet it is so complicated at the same time.  When I am coaching for life purpose, I often uncover a lot of resistance and doubt in clients when we get into the following of the sparks.

By following the sparks I mean follow the sparks of joy, curiosity, and generally follow what feels good.  In doing so you will quite literally find all of the answers you are seeking.

The resistance that comes up are deer in headlight looks with comments like,

“Well I can’t just do what feels good.”

“I feel drawn to doing this thing but I’m way too busy for that.”

“What would ‘they’ think if I did that?”

Basically, we’ve gotten so used to talking ourselves out of doing things that we are drawn to that we can’t imagine just saying yes to them!
