Feeling stuck is far too common, and it is extremely frustrating.

One of the most common things I hear from coaching clients is that they feel stuck. They aren’t necessarily in crisis. In fact, many of them have successful careers, supportive relationships, and lives that look perfectly fine from the outside. Yet internally, they feel restless, disconnected, and unsure of what’s next.

If you’ve been feeling stuck in life, the good news is that being stuck is often a sign that you’re ready for growth, not that something is wrong with you.

Why Do We Feel Stuck?

Feeling stuck usually happens when there is a gap between where you are and where you want to be. Sometimes you know exactly what you want but you aren’t sure how to actually get there. You find yourself hitting obstacles, and feel like a truck that’s stuck in the mud – you’ve got your foot on the gas, but your tires are just spinning out and you’re not moving forward (sidenote: this is usually where burnout and exhaustion sets in)!

Other times, you don’t even know what you want anymore. You may have spent years checking all the boxes, meeting expectations, and doing what seemed like the “right” thing only to realize that the life you’ve built no longer feels aligned with who you are becoming. Or maybe you realize that you’re living life for other people and that’s why you aren’t happy!

Feeling stuck can show up in your career, relationships, friendships, health and wellness, personal growth and can also feel magnified during life transitions. It is not a road closed sign, it is actually a detour or scenic turnout that we can navigate together.

What to Do When You Feel Stuck in Life

1. Just Do The Next Right Thing

One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing they need to have the entire plan before taking action. They jump too far ahead and try to predict things that haven’t even come into the picture yet. When you feel stuck, just focus on doing the next right thing.

Ask yourself:

  • What feels good to me right now?
  • What feels right?
  • What is calling to me even if it makes no sense?
  • What is one small action I could take this week?

Clarity often comes through action, not endless thinking.

2. Get Honest About What’s No Longer Working

Many people stay stuck because they spend more energy convincing themselves they’re fine than admitting something needs to change. Be honest with yourself.

Are you:

  • Burned out at work?
  • Settling in a relationship?
  • Feeling disconnected from your purpose?
  • Living according to someone else’s expectations?

You cannot create meaningful change until you’re willing to acknowledge what’s not working. The truth hurts, but it also sets you free.

3. Focus on What You Can Control

When we feel stuck, it’s easy to obsess over things outside of our control. I actually think that as a society we are taught to spend way too much energy on things we can’t control, but that’s a story for another day. For now, shift your focus to what you can control, which is very little. What you can control is YOU. Your reaction to things, the way you show up. That’s about it!

In case you need the reminder, you have no control over:

  • Other people’s choices
  • The job market
  • The timing of opportunities

But you can control:

  • Your habits
  • Your mindset
  • The conversations you initiate
  • The actions you take

The things you have no control over only gain control over you if you let them. Don’t make them into something that they’re not – instead focus on your mindset, your energy, and what you are bringing to the situation.

4. Stop Waiting to Feel Ready

Let’s be honest, when in your life have you ever done anything that you actually felt ready for? From leaps of faith in your career to starting a family to just going for it with your fitness journey, you probably have a whole lot of examples where you weren’t ready and did it anyway.

We can build your self confidence along the way, but if you can muster up enough self trust, okay-ness and faith to make the move, that’s all it takes. Self confidence comes from within and can be increased through action, not through thinking. Trust the nudges you are getting on next steps, and talk yourself into them instead of out of them.

5. Get Support

Feeling stuck shows up on almost every single intake form I have gotten from the thousands of people I have coached over the last 7 years. And I get it, I have been there too!

Having a trained professional connect dots, offer new perspective, reflect your patterns back to you, hold you accountable and help you get clarity on who you really are, what you really want and how to actually get it is life changing. Life coaching is truly so helpful when you are feeling stuck!

The Truth About Feeling Stuck

Feeling stuck is frustrating, but it can also be an invitation to reevaluate your priorities, to reconnect with yourself and to create a life that feels more aligned with who you are today.

The people I work with are often surprised to discover that what felt like being stuck was actually the beginning of a new chapter. If you’re feeling stuck in life and aren’t sure what to do next, start with one small step. You don’t need perfect clarity. You just need enough courage to take the next step forward.
